*The team captains voted to allow Game Over a last minute sub to finish the season and compete in the playoff since regular player would not be able to qualify.
I want to say WOW. The group we had playing during this was a lot of fun. Even when it came to the last week, the captains kept that "fun" attitude and allowed a team a chance to play in the playoffs with a new player. I think we all learned from each other, and just maybe, we're a tighter knit group then we were before. I want to say thanks for playing and it's been a blast.
It was nice to return to the Medalist World Tournament in Las Vegas this year. I had missed 2009 and really didn’t know what to think of the new venue and what not. Other than the initial shock of Texas Station being so far away from the strip, it was a good venue. Food and other activities were around and drinks could be found for a reasonable price. Inside the dart venue itself, drink tickets were purchased for $5 each, not a bad price if you ask me. It was a good in-between for mixed drinks and for beer drinkers alike. Of course the tickets you purchased were only good for that one day, to stop fake tickets from getting into circulation. Plenty of bathrooms not like the few at the Riviera, which usually became very dirty and crowded. In fact, I may even say there was a bit more room in-between boards and so forth. I could be wrong, but I think everything looked rather nice. The carpet wasn’t that typical eyesore that made things impossible to find your darts either.
The tournament itself had shown that Medalist put thought into things. This year each player was given a player card. It assisted in registering and allowing you to check your own stats as they were updated. I think it’s a great system, but maybe mail out cards before hand the registered to eliminate the line that tied up the first day registration and gave us a slow start. I personally liked the round robin format with the chances for a wild card. Player got to play 5 other teams usually. That’s more bang for your buck than 1 and dead. With the slow play that plagued day 1, Medalist was proactive is changing the format to help things along. Though in the knockout bracket, I question a race to 2 all the way up through B division. B players are often seen in A too. They can handle the extra games needed to make it a race to 3. I’m not faulting anyone, the Medalist staff saw that a change had to be put in place, and did just that. You have to admire that, instead of trucking through with each event going longer and longer over due. The normal screens were in place, and people had a few places to crowd around to see where they were playing or the action going on. Due to the way the location is, many of the Novice matches were played in a room away from every one else. Space was a commodity, and as the matches progressed the room across the way was phased out.
If I had a gripe, it would be about these. It really didn’t hurt me any, but as I looked around, I noticed I was missing our Dart master rivals from AZ. The Southwest Finals were taking place at the exact time that World was taking place. It was down stairs in the bowling alley. From the pictures I’ve seen, it looked great. These players shouldn’t have to choose between their finals or world. They should be able to play in both like the rest of the Medalist players. My second and last thing is the staggered entry fees. Sounds like a good way to pull in more players doesn’t it? All it really did was massively dwarf the lower division payouts. Though turn out was lower in those divisions, with less money coming in to begin with, the payouts showed. A nice medium across the board is needed. With that player’s money following them into their division and being paid out there. Well, maybe a small price out of every one entry to go towards Grand Masters. They are the cream of the crop and every one should strive to be them. They’ve earned it, they deserve a little more reward. That’s it, only two things I could reflect on that may need to change.
The staff was friendly and well prepared. Drinks were great and the competition was there. People were for the most part very friendly and approachable. The clothing police made sure nothing got through that was too bad.
I would ask, and this is darts in general, how do you all feel about players wearing mp3 players while shooting. I think it takes from the game myself. A device that helps you tune out things and redefine your attention. Won’t be long before players are putting on a arm brace that forces proper throwing stroke. Is it the same? I think so. I could be wrong since I’ve learned to tune things out and shoot.
Anyways I’m way off track, this is about the Medalist World event. Alaska did very well for the amount of players sent down. 17 players from Alaska, 16 of which are DSC Ventures players. Can’t begin to tell you how proud I am to have such a turn out. 7 second place trophies returned to Anchorage. 3 belong to the Whaler, the other 4 to Time Out Lounge, all DSC Ventures. Many times teams place 9th or better. Anchorage is very competitive in darts. Our Novice players showed an understanding in cricket that was lacking at that level. I think our greatest fault if any was pushing 5’s into B division instead of sending them into C to dominate. Alaska had no players in C division. All the placing on stage were done in either A or Novice. It was amazing to see the way the group we had supported each other. Watching games and cheering each other along, it really was like we all played for 1 giant team.
I can’t wait until next year, that’s all I’m gonna say. There are a few places to play darts, but maybe, just maybe, I did something right in making DSC. I hope all the players have the same feelings and we all continue to support one another. Thanks again to every one!
Last night wrapped up the playoffs for the AK Novice division at Time Out Lounge. ALL IN managed to grab both the 2nd place for season and toppled the favorite in playoffs to take 1st. They will collect $210.00 to split. The DSC TRBLE girls grabbed 1st in season and fought their way to 2nd in playoffs. They get to split $310.00. Once again, that's $520.00 payout overall.
Rumor has it, payouts should be able to start going out Thursday (6/10/10)!
The AK Novice division was made to give 1's and 2's a place to play and compete against equally skilled players. No 3's or 4's dominating the division gives every one a chance to compete.
I hope every one enjoyed the season. I look forward to seeing new players and returning ones come Sept.
Congratulations are in order for D.S.C. Fever for winning 1st in season & playoffs. They will bring home $360.00 to split for their efforts. 2nd was locked up in similar fashion, 2ByTwo grabbed the spot for both season & playoffs, winning $160.00. That's $520.00 for a division payout!
I also want the thank 4Shots & MtNGoat for playing in this division. By the looks of things and talking to people that played in it, it was a good time
Payouts should be here in about a week or so. Keep in mind we finished early so we could enjoy our summer, Medalist playoffs everywhere else are still taking place.
Blind draw will happen May 1st 7:30 sign in, 8:00 start time at Time Out Lounge. $5.00 entry, bar will match and add $20.00 for top co-ed. See you there!

Don't forget to call in your scores. The winning team get's the privilege of the phone call into Medalist.
Also I'll be collecting the "White Score Sheets" weekly to scan and send over to Medalist. So please make sure to place them in the score sheet area in the box.
Important note that some may have over looked in the packet. Both '01 and Cricket in all divisions have a 25 round limit.
Cricket, if the round limit is reached, the game will be decided by marks recorded (not points). In the event of a tie, points scored will be the tie breaker.
'01, if the round limit is reached, the team with the fewest remaining points wins the game.
Basic players meeting Feb 6th 1:00pm at the Alaska Whaler. Covers the D.S.C. Dart Leagues operating Medalist out of Alaska Whaler and Time Out Lounge. Will have Player's Packets and discussions. Great time for Questions and Answers.
Well it took no small feet, but it's happened! Players that partake in D.S.C. Leagues out of Time Out Lounge & The Alaskan Whaler can join ASTDA.
ASTDA fee is $10.00 a person per year.
This allows you to partake in the events they hold through out the year. As of late, there's been a few great tournaments with nice payouts! Each player has the option and must been done by the third week of season.
If you have any questions at all, give Mike Dupes a ring at 903-2731.
