Well the 2007-2008 Downtown Dart League has come to an end. We had eight teams this year and as far as I can tell, everyone had a great time. I want to thank John Geer for being our league President yet another year, along with all the team captains who did an excellent job calling in the scores, along with working together to make this an outstanding year.. Hopefully, every team will be back for another season next year (September Time-Frame). Before I wrap-up this final update, I would like to take a couple of minutes to point out some highlights from this season.
Carpentiers, led by Don Hartin, were basically unstoppable throughout the normal season and easily took 1st place. I believe they only lost two matches all year. Great Job Don!
Unlike 1st, there was a real battle for 2nd. Four teams, Cabin Tavern, Hideaway A, Club O, and Buckaroo fought right down to the last week of the season, with the Cabin Tavern winning by the skin of their teeth.
All though not battling for 2nd, the final three teams always played hard and there was no guarantee who was going to win when someone played them.
After the normal season, we always play a single elimination seeded playoff, with the winner claiming the rights to a beautiful traveling trophy that has been around since at least 1982. And as has been the norm in our league, finishing first does not guarantee you will win the trophy.
As our league champ Carpentiers can attest to. They barely survived their first round
match against Hideaway B, just to fall to Club O in the semi-finals. With the upset, that left Club O and the Cabin Tavern to battle it out for the trophy, and a battle it was with the match going all the way to the final game to determine the winner. It was Cabin Tavern for the second year in a row. Is this the start of dynasty? Probably not, but we enjoy it while we can.
Thursday the 27th of March was our award banquet for the season. It was held at Carpentiers, where Dave Carpentier severed an outstanding meal for everyone to enjoy. We presented prize money for all teams along with a sponsorship plaque for each bar the sponsored a team. The traveling trophy was also presented to the Cabin Tavern. Afterwards, the league held a no entry fee blind draw team event. It’s the leagues way of saying thanks to everyone who shot with us this year. I am not sure who ended up taking the event, since I lost early, but there was still three teams in the hunt when I left.
I would like to close by inviting anyone who wishes to shot with us in the 2008-2009 dart-year to contact either myself at 345-9098 or John Geer at 338-6992. We can always use a few more teams or individuals, but only if you want to have FUN!
See you all next year. Pat Walker
